Who’d game for some epic whitewater???
Hydro will be releasing water from the travallyn dam which means the Cataract Gorge will be flowing. At the levels Hydro release at this makes for a river that has fairly steep and quite technical class 4 whitewater.
This is an incredible section of river that is very rarely paddled. At this stage we’ve got myself along with a bunch of other senior guides coming out of the woodwork to make things happen, it should be a heap of fun. That said this is a very full on section of river (one of if not the most technically demanding sections of whitewater the club would consider running). For that reason THIS TRIP IS DEFINITELY NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS.
Any participant needs to have reasonable on river experience (have gone on at least 2 rivers before) or alternatively have significant general outdoors experience. If in doubt contact me to discuss. If you don’t fir this category don’t worry we’ve got lots of beginner friendly trips planned in the near future.
PLAN OF ACTION –
Most of us will aim to drive up Saturday evening, camp the night near Launceston for an early start on Sunday. We will meet at the rafting sheds at 1730 on Saturday to sort gear and drive up.
Section of river will be determined on the day. I am very keen to raft the entire river however if people are feeling nervous or experience levels are not suitable we will look at running the lower section either as a warm up or as the main event.
Hydro turn the water on at 0700. Everyone needs to be at the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area at 0815 for a briefing so we get on river at 0900 at the latest. Crew with me will arrive a little earlier to get rafts sorted etc. Kayakers start using the lower section of river at 1300 so we need to be off river by then (although we still could do a second run down the upper section).
GEAR TO BRING –
Usual rafting stuff (lots of warm gear, enclosed shoes, a towel etc), cash for fuel and food, basic camping gear (we can bring some big tarps to cover everyone as long as people all have a sleeping mat and sleeping bag).
